Choosing the Right Book of Your Interest

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Whenever you go to a bookstore or a library, each and every book attracts you in one way or another. Sometimes it is due to the attractive cover of the book and sometimes it is due to the title that forces you to pick the book and have a look through its contents. One more thing that people are addicted to is the aroma of pages that comes while turning them. Most of all pleasure and inner satisfaction while reading a book cannot be achieved by any other thing.

Finding the books of your interest needs a thorough study. First of all you have to find the subject of the book that interests you more. People love to read and gain knowledge at different times on different subjects. Philosophy, Arts, science, management, business or novels can be one of your interesting subjects. Search for the books that are related to that subject. If you find positive reviews from the readers you may go for it.

Books that you have chosen should be of well reputed author. Some authors are specialized in some subjects that can offer you good material to read. Try to find the book written by author specialized in that particular subject. You may find thousands of books related to that subject but the quality of content will be available to you in particular author’s book.

Readers are attracted usually from the title of the book. You may find the title of the book which attracts and force you to pick it up.  Have an overview of the book by going through table of contents or preface. This can give a brief review and letting you find the right book.

If you are looking to save money or finding it difficult to pay for new book, you can go for second hand books. These books are available at cheaper price as compared to new ones. You can also use online coupons to find the books at cheap price.

Good to Great

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Comparison Books:

Book
One of the best corporate world price by Jim Collins, Good to Great is a comprehensive book on why some companies excel in their business with growth, increasing revenues and sales whereas other companies lose their position and brand image and are forgotten with time. With analysis of some real examples, the author has mentioned specific techniques and strategies of the companies that always move from good-to-great.
Why some companies make the leap … and other’s don’t? This question is the main objective behind the book. The book covers several features of business plan, marketing, brand management and internal/external strategies that play an important role in the operations of business and vastness of operations. Like many other corporate books, this book is not at all boring or making to yawn. The tone of the author is excellent and a lot of management perspective are taught and learnt with this book.
The most interesting and learning part for me in this book was of leadership. The leadership and the style of leading the company has a far more effect on all dimensions of operations than one can imagine. All the success and failures of the company are dependent on the top most hierarchy, and the way they lead and approach in the market. The author has also developed five levels of leaders and executives which are a unique leadership design in its own way.
To read other uniquely written corporate books of Jim Collins, one can search it on this website. All of his books are available through many retailers across the country. One can order it before seeing different online price comparison and their shipping deals. For a good start towards Jim Collins findings, I highly recommend all businessmen and management professional and seekers to read Good to Great for once.

Going Rogue An American Life

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

This book is about a women real life American success story. Going Rogue An American Life is a biography of Sarah Palin and Going Rogue traces one ordinary citizen’s extraordinary journey and imparts Palin’s vision of a way forward for America and her unfailing hope in the greatest nation on earth.

Sarah Palin grew up in Alaska towns, from Skagway to Wasilla to Anchorage, while her dad taught science and coached high school sports. She and her future husband, Todd Palin, graduated from Wasilla High School in 1982, and she went on to earn her college degree from the School of Journalism at the University of Idaho.

Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council, then two terms as the city’s mayor and manager, and was elected by her peers as president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors. She then chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, and the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. Palin was elected Alaska’s youngest, and first female, governor, serving from 2006 to 2009. While serving her state she was tapped as Senator John McCain’s running mate in 2008, becoming the first female Republican vice presidential candidate in our nation’s history.

One year ago, Sarah Palin burst onto the national political stage like a comet. Yet even now, few Americans know who this remarkable woman really is. On September 3, 2008 Alaska Governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin delivered a speech at the Republican National Convention that electrified the nation and instantly made her one of the most recognizable women in the world.

Like her GOP running mate, John McCain, Palin was not a packaged and over-produced candidate. She was a Main Street American woman: a working mom, wife of a blue collar union man, and mother of five children, the eldest of whom was serving his country in a yearlong deployment in Iraq and the youngest, an infant with special needs.

But as the campaign unfolded, Palin became a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Supporters called her “refreshing” and “honest,” a kitchen-table public servant they felt would fight for their interests. Opponents derided her as a wide-eyed Pollyanna unprepared for national leadership. But none of them knew the real Sarah Palin.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is the latest addition to the series of books based on the character Greg Heffley.

There is something about this Wimpy Kid that children simply love and it keeps them coming back for more. The whole series of books is based on a self-confessed wimpy kid but who is in reality managing to go through middle school unscathed by using his wit and imagination.

There are comic strips and illustrations in every one of the titles of the series, but they are chapter books and one of them is a diary for the reader to fill out. My eldest daughter enjoyed writing her very own Wimpy Kid Diary for a while.A book that engrosses kids is a book to be recommended, especially in an era of video games and electronics that constantly pull children’s attention in a different direction.

In this book Greg Heffley decides to spend the beautiful summer indoors, indulging precisely in video games, while his friends are having fun outside.

Greg starts out his summer living his fantasy of not having schedules or rules and just hanging out indoors with the shades drawn. However, his mom has different plans to promote family togetherness. A new pet may change the possibly predictable outcome of the story.

This is just one of the many Amulet Books children may use for the minimum of 15 to 20 minutes a day they should devote to reading. Make sure your child has an adequate supply of books on hand to promote reading and that you spend time reading to him or her as well. Children are more apt to become good readers if their parents share this activity with them.

Macmillan Audio Social Intelligence

Friday, September 11th, 2009

As a working mom, I find it hard to sit down and read a book as often as I’d like to, so I often listen to audio books on CD in my car when commuting and running errands. The latest book I have listened to is Macmillan Audio Social Intelligence , by Daniel Goleman.

Years ago, Goleman wrote and published Emotional Intelligence, a book that questioned that IQ (Intelligence Quotient) was the only way to measure intelligence. People who are academically brilliant can be illiterate when it comes to dealing with their emotions. The book was insightful, not to mention a bestseller.

In Social Intelligence, which is a pleasure to listen to since the reader has an easy cadence and warm tone, Goleman explains in detail the biological changes that take place in the brain and the body during social interactions. These condition the manner in which we interact with our parents, children, peers and significant others.

There is a whole chapter devoted to the art of flirting and how and why it is that certain people are attracted to one another and others are not.

A significant other’s body odor can make us segregate oxytocyn, a feel-good hormone, and a hug or kiss from a loved one can raise our energy levels for a while.

Empathy – or the ability to put oneself in another’s shoes – is also addressed profusely. It is interesting to know that part of the generalized lack of empathy in our society stems from the fact that our face-to-face interactions are being substituted by Internet communication via social networking sites and email.

Empathy is fostered by eye contact and body language, and this is something that the Internet does not provide. I recommend the audio book to readers who want to understand interpersonal relationships, and improve their own social, family and professional interactions.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking

Friday, September 4th, 2009

The book Mastering Art of French Cooking co-authored by Julia Child has, after forty years, once again hit the list of bestselling cookbooks. This has come about because of the film Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep and partly based on her own memoir entitled My Life in France.

Mastering Art French Cooking took Child and her coauthors over eight years to put together and it was meant to adapt French cooking to the American lifestyle and the ingredients and measurements that can be found here. It also offers different suggestions to improve one same dish and how to accompany it with complementary sides.

Julie and Julia, the movie, tells two parallel stories that take place in different times. One is that of Julia Child and how she started to cook seriously when she was over 40 in Paris and later became not only a best-selling author but also a TV celebrity. The other story is that of Julie, a born writer who feels she has never completed any meaningful project in her life and who, right before turning 30 decides to take on the challenge of cooking all of the recipes in Julia Child’s cookbook in one year, and blog about it.

The blog eventually becomes a success and is later turned into a book which became the movie itself, and which has been the spark that reignited the sales of this unique cookbook, that has numerous illustrations and detailed instructions that make an interesting read and also a surefire success at the dinner table if you are having people over and want to impress them with a savory French dish.
